About Our Founder

Estrella Chan has worked with clients from Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, North America, and South America. By the time she began her career teaching English as a foreign language, she had already lived in three cultures very diverse from each other. Her own experience living among values and traditions so different from her upbringing gives her insights that further support her clients' needs.

Ms. Chan is one of the few ESL instructors who has a Masters degree in English as a Second Language and in Higher Education. This is extremely rare in the ESL profession. Less than one percent has received this formal training.

Ms. Chan is the first consultant in the Pacific Northwest to bring customized ESL training programs into the workplace. From the first day she set foot in her college ESL classroom, she recognized the need to support non-native English speakers in their work environment, where they use English the most. Long before the Northwest was ready for this trend, she spoke to companies about designing programs that tailor to their unique needs. Within a decade, colleges and social service agencies caught on, and now ESL classes in the workplace is common in the Greater Seattle area.

Besides increasing her clients' English skills, Ms. Chan also coaches them how to succeed in U.S. companies. American managers seek her expertise to communicate more effectively with foreign-born employees. Her articles on intercultural communication have been published in the Puget Sound Business Journal and other local business publications. Her work has been featured in The Seattle Times, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Puget Sound Business Journal, The China News, Taiwan, The Citizens Newspaper, and Cultural Diversity at Work Newsletter.

Ms. Chan's clients include dignitaries, celebrities, executives, scientists, journalists, clergy, international athletes, engineers, university students, electronic assemblers, and hotel housekeepers. They come from the software, biotech, communications, textile, electronic manufacturing, and the hospitality industries.

Among Ms. Chan's corporate clients are the Westin Hotel, Stouffer Madison Hotel, Physio-Control, Korry Electronics, Pacific Electro Dynamics, ATL, Sundog, MicroComputer Electronics, Universal Avionics, Harland Financial Services, and Micro Computer Corporation.

As a public speaker, Ms. Chan's audience include New York's Department of Labor, Women's Bureau, Workforce 2000, Superintendent of Public Instruction, national conferences for educators, human resources round tables, and rotary clubs. She has also been a guest speaker of Toastmasters International.

Ms. Chan was nominated for the Woodring College's Excellence in Teaching Award. She was invited by Governor Mike Lowry of Washington State to contribute her input for its School-to-Work Development Grant. While serving on the YWCA's Board of Directors, she promoted understanding among cultures through talking circles as well as providing support for immigrant parents raising children born in their new culture.
